Sports Massage

What is it?
Sports Massage is a much “deeper” massage than the traditional massage one may receive in a beauty salon or spa. This is achieved by working more intimately with the muscles (both those which are superficial and those which are deep) and working with the tendons and ligament of the musculoskeletal system.

Its aims
a)To promote recovery from injury, exercise (in the case of a sports person pre and post training or a competitive event).
b)To promote good working health of the muscles, tendons and ligaments.
c)To prevent an injury occurring by promotion of b) above and engendering good posture, stretching and exercise regimes.
d)Psycho/emotional stress relief.
The effects of massage
a)Improvement of the general circulation – aiding cell growth, repair and nutrition and efficient elimination of waste materials that arise from the production of energy, and debris from any tissue damage or inflammation. As well as being benificial to local tissues improvement in the general circulation can also help improve the health or recovery of most other systems of the body.
b)Enhancements to Lymphatic flow aiding removal of toxins and other cell detritus.
c)Prevention and breakdown of scar tissue.
d)Breakdown of adhesions and fibrous tissue.
e)Increase tissue flexibility.
f)Stimulation of the Nervous System resulting in relaxation of the tissues and thus reduction in pain
g)Stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system which can often have a positive effect on many quite major medical conditions i.e. high blood pressure, migraines, insomnia and digestive disorders

It is important to note that the above must not be confused with the need to get professional help (from doctors, physio’s, counsellors etc) for major traumas. The sports massage therapist is an aid to these professionals and they are able to work alongside them in promoting recovery and well being of body and mind.
